Professor Tang graduated from the University of Hong Kong Medical School in 1971, after which he trained at the Clarke Institute of Psychiatry, University of Toronto and obtained his specialist qualification in both Canada and the USA. Interested in research, he attended the Institute of Medical Sciences at the University of Toronto and obtained his PhD in neurochemistry. On a MRC fellowship, he spent a postdoctoral year in dopamine and serotonin receptor research at the Department of Pharmacology, University of Toronto, under Professor Philip Seeman, the discoverer of brain dopamine receptor changes in schizophrenia. Professor Tang's research work on serotonin receptors contributed significantly to the development of a new generation of atypical neuroleptics and SSRI antidepressants. After heading the Psychopharmacology department at the Clarke Institute (succeeding Professor Hornykiewizc, who discovered dopamine deficiency in Parkinsonˇ¦s disease), Professor Tang was recruited to the University of California, Irvine. Subsequently, he successfully restructured the psychiatry department at the Long Beach VA Hospital (a primary teaching hospital for the University of California Medical School) in the most challenging Southern California managed care environment. He was later selected as Professor and Chairman by the University of California, becoming the first and only Chair of Psychiatry of Chinese origin in the USA. His primary research and academic interests include mood disorders, drug discovery and clinical and molecular psychopharmacology.
