Airport

Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) at Sepang is the main gateway to Malaysia. The airport is located approximately 50km south of Kuala Lumpur. From KLIA there are several transport options to the city including the high-speed KLIA Ekspres train, taxis and buses. A non-stop 28-minute ride on the KLIA Ekspres will connect you from the airport to the KL City Air Terminal (KLCAT). KLIA Ekspres departs every 15 minutes during peak hours and every 20 minutes during off-peak times.

Airport Tax

A charge of RM6.00 is applicable for domestic flights and RM45.00 for International flights.

Climate

Malaysia has an equatorial climate with uniform temperatures throughout the year. Temperatures range from 32 degrees Celsius during the day to 21 degrees Celsius during the night. Light cool comfortable clothes are ideal for during the day and a jacket may be required for evenings.

Currency and Foreign Exchange

The local currency is the Ringgit or RM. The RM comes in denominations of RM1, RM2, RM5, RM10, RM50 and RM100. Coins are denoted as sen. These include 1 sen, 5 sen, 10 sen, 20 sen, 50 sen and RM1. Foreign currency can be changed in either banks, licensed money changes, airports and most hotels. Travellers are required to declare the amount of local and foreign currencies in their possession on arrival into and departure from Malaysia. Non-resident travellers to Malaysia are permitted to import up to a maximum amount of RM1000 only and any amount of foreign currencies.

Electricity

The voltage charge is 220–240 volts A/C at 50 cycles per second. The power plugs used in Malaysia are the standard British 3-pin square plugs and sockets.

Health

Malaysia is free from most contagious diseases. You would need a special vaccination only if coming from an endemic area.

Insurance

It is strongly recommended that delegates take out adequate medical, travel and personal insurance prior to the commencement of travel.

Language

The official language of the Meeting is English.

Passport and Visa

Most nationalities do not need a visa for stays of fewer than two months in Malaysia. Please check visa requirements for all passports. However, passports must be valid for six months beyond your date of departure. Please check with your local consulate or embassy for latest information. Alternatively consult the Immigration Department of Malaysia website.

Prohibited

The trafficking of illegal drugs is a serious offence in Malaysia and such an offence carries the death penalty.

Taxation and Tipping

Most hotels and restaurants levy a 10% service charge and 5% government sales tax on bills. Therefore, tipping is not customary. However, should you want to show your appreciation for good services, a small tip will do.
